Rupea Fortress, as it appears to us today, covers an area of almost 11 ha with walls, towers and inner courtyards. Due to the dominant position it occupies near the European road E 60 and the city, it is a remarkable presence from a great distance. Despite some speculations advanced by different authors, it is certain that its surface was used in prehistory, but not in Antiquity, by the Dacians or Romans. It is equally certain that it represents a medieval creation, a major architectural complex, with levels resulting in five centuries of operation.
The walls of the fortress, on the outside, are generally austere, devoid of the former dowry, which must have been mostly made of wood. But, fortunately, the Towers Tower preserves a wooden frame from the 15th century, and in other places traces of latrines or stove chimneys can be found.
