Baia Mare planetarium is a department of Baia Mare Astronomy Science Museum
Opened in 1969, the Baia Mare planetarium is one of the most important tourist and cultural-scientific attractions of the region, a portal to the deep universe: the solar system, the brightest main stars, the constellations, the galaxy, celestial mechanics and the history of the universe since the Big-Bang there are some landmarks to discover.
Our special optical planetarium is a modern star's projector, which display a very interesting artificial sky, with Sun, planets, moons, thousands of stars, artistic representation of constellations – all of them in respect with proper motions of these objects through the sky, by automatic calculations, algorithms applied by computing systems. Our space-time trip begins from Baia Mare with the day and night sky with many observing points and destinations. We will make a tour of the sky, like it could be seen from Baia Mare, with constellations and other marvel objects. Then will fly to the North Pole and South Pole of the Earth, to see the sky from those positions (Zeiss Skymaster ZKP4)
The second unit planetarium, Digital Rover from RSA Cosmos, which is immersive and also impressive, gives us the opportunity to show our visitors the deep sky and the complexity of the Universe. Traveling outside the Milky way, countering the unknown, Rover can provide live guidance and cosmos tours and also play digital fulldome shows.
We are the only place in Romania, where you could learn about Romanian traditional constellations through our digital multimedia exhibition Digitarium, with text and audio support for English language, a list of 39 Romanian constellations, part of the Romanian and universal immaterial patrimony, a container of epic and ethical stories – in an original folk version – explaining the history of things, the relationships between sky, divinity, Earth, and Man. The initial project started in 2012 has expanded and now we have displayed a version for blinded people and a practical micro-planetarium for this special public (with 3D stars and asterisms).
You can visit among other thematic exhibitions (Hubble 30, Messier Objects, Solar System 2D and Solay System free air park exhibition) our very best and almost functional former star projection system – the ZKP1 – Zeiss Yena star projector with which we used to make astronomical demonstrations in our planetarium dome.
Because the Observatory building needs some refurbishing and modernizing, from time to time, at special events - astronomical or cultural themed - we use to organize outside the building stargazing events: astronomical observations.
We are also providing a special science camp in summer (all July), with special registration form, with applied physics, astrophotography, astronautics, astrophysics astronomy and more - as workshops.
Baia Mare planetarium is located near the historical center of the city (15 minutes walk) and to the Mineralogy Museum also (10 minutes walk).
