In the eastern part of the city, on the Cornesti plateau, there is the Zoo, 488 m above the Black Sea and 197 m above the city. The oak and hornbeam forest, called "Padurea Mare" offers ideal conditions for garden animals.
The zoological point in Targu Mures, established in the 60s, is a place of attraction for the local population and tourists. When the garden was founded, it had an area of 600-700 m2, which in 1965 increased to 20 hectares, then in 2010 to 40 hectares.
When the gates were opened, there were only ten animals: 3 wolves, 2 bears, 2 wild boars, 2 pheasants and a deer. This number increased a lot until the year 2002 and thus currently there are around 750 animals belonging to 150 species, both local and exotic fauna. Currently the only garden in the country that has elephants and giraffes in its collection.
Next to the zoo there is a huge playground for children.
