
The surface of 1627 ha of which 345 ha are occupied by the island itself and is located on the administrative territory of the city of Moldova Noua, Caraş-Severin County. The special avifauna protection area, the Ostrov - Moldova Veche island wetland includes the Ostrov - Moldova Veche island located on the Danube river and the water luster bordering the island, up to a depth of 2 m. On the island were identified 72 species of birds belonging to 30 families from 14 orders.
Of these, 28 species are included in the Wild Birds Conservation Directive, including Phalacrocorax pygmaeus, Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis, Ardea purpurea, Nycticorax nycticorax, Egretta garzetta, Oenanthe hispanica, Anas strepera, Anas Platyrus. Among the rare species of fish are: Lota lota and Umbra krameri. The flora is represented by arboreal elements such as Salix alba, Populus alba, Salix purpurea and herbaceous plants such as Salvinia natans, Elodea canadensis, Phragmites australis, Butomus umbellatus, Iris pseudacorus.
